The state government is planning to set up faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTP) for treatment and disposal of sludge collected in septic tanks and pit latrines in towns that do not have under ground

BENGALURU: The state government is planning to set up faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTP) for treatment and disposal of sludge collected in septic tanks and pit latrines in towns that do not have under ground drainage systems. The decision was taken after the successful implementation of the project in Devanahalli town in Bengaluru Urban district.

Devanahalli, which has a population of about 30,000 and about 5,000 houses does not have an underground drainage (UGD) system. Speaking to reporters, Director of Municipal Administration Dr R Vishal said the FSTP system includes a suction machine which will collect the sludge from individual houses periodically. “The sludge will be taken to a designated area where it will be treated in a scientific way. The bi-product of this method is a very good manure which can be used in farms,’’ he said.
The government is planning to set up an  FSTP at Kalaburagi, Bidar and other places, he said, adding that it would cost around `3 crore to `5 crore.
