Cops take tough measures to curb drag racing in Kolar

KOLAR: The Bengaluru-Chennai national highway near Kolar is the new hub for drag racing and wheeling for youths from Bengaluru, especially during weekends.
These drag racers throw caution to the wind and perform dangerous stunts on the roads, thereby threatening the safety of other motorists and pedestrians.
Kolar police, which have already booked cases against 36 vehicles and collected a fine to the tune of `19,000, have decided to step up the vigil on the highway.

Speaking to Express, Kolar SP Divya V Gopinath said strict measures have been taken to check the wheelie menace. Recently, 36 vehicles were seized and the youths were warned, she added.
More police personnel are deputed near the Kondaraja Gate, the border of Kolar.
“With the help of CCTV footage, we are keeping a close watch on traffic violators. Later, the violators will be summoned and cases will be booked against them. Measures like cancelling of the licence are being planned,” the SP said.

Divya said already scores of barricades were kept on the border and all the vehicles were monitored.
According to Shivarama, a vegetable vendor on the highway, two groups comprising of six to eight persons come in the morning and engage in wheeling especially during weekends. When they see the policemen, they disperse only to join again later, he added. Villagers who come to the market in the early morning are scared of them, he said.
