BALLARI: As mercury shoots past 40 degree Celsius in Ballari, animals at the mini zoo, or Atal Bihari Zoological Park, are being given a bath thrice a day to beat the heat.

The highest maximum temperature in Ballari is between 41-43 degree C. Since the zoo is very close to the rocky hillock, temperature is higher around here.

Zoo authorities have come up with the idea of bathing the animals at least thrice a day to keep them cool. The zoo has leopards, sloth bear, snakes, deers, birds and other animals. The staff also spray water inside enclosures.

Purushotham K, executive director at the Atal Bihari Zoological Park, said, “The animals looked dull when there was a rise in temperature. We decided that bathing them twice or thrice a day makes them active again.”
