Maddur accident: Death toll rises to 13

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday announced a compensation of `1 lakh each to the family members of 13 people who died in a road accident in Maddur on Sunday.

MYSURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday announced a compensation of `1 lakh each to the family members of 13 people who died in a road accident in Maddur on Sunday.

Siddaramaiah said the government will also provide free treatment to the injured. “We can’t give a compensation of more than `1 lakh for the family members of the deceased. Earlier, compensation was not given to victims of accidents, only after our government came to power, we started giving compensation to accident victims,” he said.

When the chief minister told the kin of the victims to claim compensation through the insurance of the vehicle, they  staged a protest at a hospital in Mandya and demanded that the government provide `5 lakh. Tension prevailed when they refused to shift the bodies from the hospital for funeral. Later, the police arrived at the spot and pacified the protesters.

On Sunday night, 10 people died and 30 were injured after a goods vehicle in which the were traveling rammed into a tree near Doreshettyhalli in Maddur taluk. The death toll increased to 13 on Monday.
