BENGALURU:  Two college students have alleged that they were assaulted by police near Chandapura Circle in Anekal on Saturday around 7.30 pm, and have demanded action against them. Sairaj Natraj, one of the complainants, shared the harrowing experience on social media and posted pictures revealing bruises on their bodies, where police allegedly struck them with lathis.

Natraj said he was riding his bike with his cousin near Chandapura Circle amid heavy traffic caused by the weekly market and an election victory procession. “My cousin was directing me to take a right turn, since I was heading straight, which the police mistook as some insult against him, and took us near a booth where there were 5-6 cops, who were drunk and chewing tobacco. When we questioned our unlawful detention, they started beating us,” Natraj said in his social media post.

He alleged that they were verbally abused, hit with lathis and slapped before they were let go. When they came back with their parents and relatives to question the detention, they too were harassed and threatened that they would be put behind bars, he added. Natraj tagged the police, demanding action. After his tweet went viral, Suryanagar police approached them and promised to sort out the issue, he said.

Bengaluru Rural SP Mallikarjun Baladandi told TNIE, “According to the information I received, the students were drunk and used foul language against the policemen on duty, which triggered the staff and led to an altercation. The students will be questioned on Monday, after which we will get clarity on who was at fault. We have not registered a case yet.”
