Legal studies to be included in SCERT syllabus

KOCHI: In order to create awareness among schoolchildren on matters of law and basic fundamental rights, the Education Department has decided to incorporate legal studies in the SCERT syllabus from the next academic year.

The Education Department is planning to implement legal studies in both high schools and higher secondary schools from next year in the state.

“We have discussed the matter with the curriculum committee and decided to include legal studies in the state syllabus.

Timely revision will be done and it will be implemented in other classes too in the coming years,” said Education Minister M A Baby.

Directives have been issued by the Education Department to the SCERT to consider lessons on legal studies while preparing textbooks for the next academic year.

Director of Public Instruction A P M Mohammad Hanish said that it was really necessary that the young generation should be aware of the Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code and other important acts such as the Consumer Protection Act, Right To Information Act and traffic rules which are applicable in day to day life.

“We are also planning to allot a period for legal studies from the next academic year,” he said.

According to experts, the incorporation of legal studies will help in expanding social consciousness among children.
