KOTTAYAM: Jaik C Thomas, the SFI activist who was dismissed from CMS College here but allowed to write exams as a part of a settlement reached a few weeks ago, was not able to appear for the exams on Friday on grounds of attendance shortage.

The college management insisted that the university should issue necessary orders exempting him from fulfilling the mandatory minimum attendance to appear in a varsity exam, since Jaik had only less than 25 percent attendance.

Meanwhile, Mahatma Gandhi University Vice-Chancellor Rajan Gurukkal reiterated that the approach of college principal M M Korah on the issue, including a formal discussion with the varsity, was one of non-cooperation. Student stirs on college campuses are not new, but has to be dealt with tactfully, the VC said.

As a part of the district administration-sponsored truce between the college management and the SFI, a sub-committee comprising former MP K Suresh Kurup and others was formed to negotiate with the varsity on waiving certain matters in the case of Jaik, a BA Communicative English student. But nothing tangible has materialised.
