Murder of woman: Opposition stages walkout

The Opposition on Monday charged Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan with trivialising crimes committed against women.

Opposition members also staged a walkout over the denial of permission for an adjournment motion on the murder of a 67-year-old woman in Meenchantha, Kozhikode.

K K Lathika of the CPM, who moved the adjournment motion, said that the Home Minister himself had informed the Assembly that 6,665 cases were registered for crimes against women after the UDF Government came to power. A week before the murder of Sundari in Meenchantha, there was a robbery attempt at her house, but the police had not viewed it with due seriousness, Lathika alleged.

This was not an isolated incident as crimes against women were on the rise, she said. Replying to the charges, the Home Minister assured that the culprits in the Meenchantha murder will be brought to book.
