Bank loan eludes student

Just two months after the suicide of Sruthi, a nursing student, following the denial of an education loan, another student has come up with a complaint that he was denied a bank loan.

He has threatened to end his life since he is left with no option.

Sreejith M, son of V S Mani of Srejinivas in Moonnumoolayil, near Chengalam, has submitted a request to the District Collector to intervene in the issue.

According to the complaint, Sreejith, a secondyear general nursing student at S B School of Nursing, Bangalore, had approached State Bank of Travancore (SBT), Thiruvarppu, oneand- a-half years ago for an educational loan of `1.

6 lakh.

Though the bank authorities promised to sanction the loan, they retracted from it later, citing the reason that SBT could only sanction loans to students who have passed relevant courses with 50 per cent marks.

Meanwhile, District Collector Mini Antony said that Sreejith’s request has been forwarded to the district scrutiny committee to be held on July 7.

“We will call in the bank branch manager and the regional authorities concerned regarding the issue.
