The ‘Gulf’ gave them the wealth and status that they are enjoying now. At least one member of every family here is working in the Gulf countries. And when the locality needed a name, they did not think twice and since then, it is ‘Pravasi Nagar’.
Pravasi Nagar is a residential area in Cherumuku near Tirurangadi. Earlier, the locality did not have a specific name which made it difficult for the postman to bring posts and money orders to the right address. It brought trouble to the NRI community and their families living here as well.
“Earlier, the entire region was known as Cherumukku. It was difficult to find the right address from the vast locality. That is when we thought of giving our area a name,” said V P Moitheenkutty, an NRK.
Most of the pravasis from here are working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They do not have the feeling that they have left their native place when they are in the Gulf. Most of them see each other daily and some are working together. There are more than 50 houses in Pravasi Nagar.
Pravasi Kala-Kayika Vedi is an active club in Pravasi Nagar. It is playing a key role in maintaining unity in the area. People of adjacent areas actively support them for conducting various functions in Pravasi Nagar.
“The place is well known for the number of NRKs it has. The name of the place itself indicates how deeply they are connected with the Gulf region,” said A K Musthafa, resident of a nearby locality.
