The Hindu Aikya Vedi activists blocked the Kayamkulam-Punaloor road on Tuesday with the body of Jithu Mohan, 21, demanding an investigation into his suspicious death.
They alleged that a police official was behind the death of Jithu. “A relative of the girl, with whom Jithu was in love, invited him to Kodungallur to discuss their marriage. They told him that they were ready to arrange the marriage if he converts to their religion. But he was not willing to convert into her community. That led to the attack and a six-member gang poured petrol over him and then set him on fire”, Hindu Aikya Vedi joint organising secretary Susilkumar said.
The activists kept the body of Jithu on the road and staged a protest for over an hour. After higher police officers contacted them and assured a detailed inquiry into the death, they ended the protest.
Jithu’s cremation was held on his house premises. Jithu is survived by father Mohan and mother Usha. Jithu was a Zoology degree student at SD College Alappuzha and a football team member of Kerala University.
