Sea wreaks havoc in Azhiyoor Panchayat

The menace of sea erosion continued to wreak havoc in Azhiyoor panchayat near Vadakkara even on Tuesday. Revenue officials said that incidents of sea erosion were reported from several parts of the Panchayat from Kottikulam Keerithodu to Naduthodu.

A total of eight families have been moved to the temporary relief camp opened at the Government Higher Secondary School, Azhiyoor. T Janil Kumar, Tahsildar, Vadakara Taluk, said, “The intensity of the sea erosion has not reduced and there are reports of tidal wave attacks from the area.

As the threat of sea erosion still persists, we have moved 30 people from eight families to a safer place.” Officials further said that some of the houses in the area were only six meters away from the tidal wave attack.  The sea erosion that continued for two days has left the coastal road in the area partially damaged and 24 coconut trees were uprooted.
