Huge haul of ammonium nitrate

The Kunnamkulam police on Monday seized another cache of ammonium nitrate weighing 1,100 kg from a quarry near Choondal in Thrissur and arrested two persons in connection with the case, third such incident in a span of one month in the district.

The arrested were identified as quarry owner Mohanan of Paramelvettil and Santhosh Kumar of Kurumattil house.

The arrest and seizure of ammonium nitrate were made following the arrest of a person, Davis, at Pattambi the other day, the police said. 

The police had seized 58 bags of ammonium nitrate from their two trucks while conducting a routine inspection. The police registered a case against them under the Explosives Act.

Earlier, the Mannuthi police on Thursday had seized 1,250 kg of ammonium nitrate, capable of causing huge explosions, from two different places and arrested four people in connection with the incident.

In yet another case, the police had seized a huge cache of the banned ammonium nitrate, weighing around 17,000 kg, from

 a lorry after it was intercepted by the police following a tip-off at Vazhikkadavu in Malappuram a month ago.

The consignment was meant to be delivered to Alungal Chemicals at Vazhayoor in the district. But in a detailed investigation the police found that no such firm was existing in the district.

“Surveillance has been intensified along the National Highways in the state after an intelligence input on large scale smuggling of the material for explosion purposes, police sources said.
