Registrar-General of Kerala High Court Kemal Pasha has submitted before the court that the efforts to make Malayalam the language of the court proceedings failed to yield any result even after holding repeated discussions with the state.
Kemal Pasha submitted that a committee headed by Justice K K Narendran, in its report on March 24, 1987, had made several recommendations regarding making Malayalam the official language of the courts. The committee had pointed out several prerequisites that have to be fulfilled before Malayalam is made the official language in courts.
The recommendations were approved by the full court and were forwarded to the government on March 23, 1988. The issue was discussed at several meetings held between the Registrar of the Court and the state.
Till date, no decision has been taken for implementing the proposals made by the court, the registrar made it clear.
The registrar made the submissions on a plea filed by Malayalam writer M N Karassery seeking a directive to expedite the decision to make malayalam the language of court proceedings. The court on Monday heard the matter and adjourned the hearing, asking the petitioner to file a reply affidavit.
