Resist hartals: Rights chief

A strong voice against hartals has been raised by none other than State Human Rights Commission chairman Justice J B Koshy. Hartal is a violation of human rights and the people should organise themselves against it, he said.

The Constitution ensures the right to live to all citizens. However, hartal-related happenings are clear instances of violation of  the right, he  said.

He spoke this during the  inaugural function of the Human Rights Education Club under the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs of the state govt here on Friday.

The district witnessed the largest number of hartals recently. Hartals prevent people from going to work, hospitals and children from attending schools, he said.

He also spoke on the damage to environment caused by illegal quarrying and sand-mining.

K Sivadasan Nair MLA presided over the function.
