Church scoffs at 'Pennezhuthu' for mocking family values

The mouthpiece of Thrissur Arch Diocese has criticised women writers and their writing, termed sometimes as ‘Pennezhuthu’, for the anti-patriarchal moorings in their writings. The article, appeared in the journal ‘Madyama- Lokam’, flayed women writers like Madhavikutty and Vijayalakshmi in general, and Sara Joseph in particular, saying that the new writers, who are following the footsteps of Madhavikutty, were scoffing at family values, conjugality, and other patriarchal values in the society. These writers are creating a new cultural anarchy in the state in the guise of flaying predatory global capitalism, caste hierarchy, religious fundamentalism and patriarchal control, and these were the clear signs of cultural decay, the article said. It further alleged that they were also promoting sexual anarchy and prostitution in the society to some extent by giving new definition to man-woman relationship. Sara Joseph’s dystopian novels are also trying to depict man and women as animals, trying to create a new sexual disorder by mocking the traditional family values. These woman writers have also been trying to legitimise the cultural anarchy and sexual perversion through ‘pennezhuthu’ for the past few years, it said. The books being sold in the market in the label of ‘pennezhuthu’ were full of these contradictory pervasive thoughts of the writers, it said. In a reply to the article, Sara Joseph, whose writing is often considered as the cornerstone of ‘pennezhuthu’ (women’s writing) in the state, said she is not afraid of the Church’s criticisms and asked it to correct itself.
