The Kerala Sahitya Akademi fellowships and awards for the year 2012 have been announced. Akademi president Perumbadavam Sreedharan announced the awards at the general council meeting held here on Friday.

Writers Zacharia and M P Veerendra Kumar have been selected for the Akademi fellowships which carry a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a citation, a plaque and a two sovereign gold medal each.

The Akademi’s life-time achievement awards, which carry a cash prize of `30,000, a certificate and a plaque each, go to K M Gopi, K P Shankaran, Karoor Sasi and G Priyadarshan.

Noted film and literary critic I Shanmughadas has been selected for the Vilasini Award.

The award carries a purse of Rs 50,000, a certificate and a citation.

His book ‘Shareeram, Nadi, Nakshatram’, a scholarly appreciation of Arundhati Roy’s ‘The God of Small Things’, made him eligible for the award.

The book belong to the category of ‘literary criticism’, published during the 2009-2011 period were considered for the award.

C Radhakrishnan, Skariya Sakkariya, and Asha Menon were the jury members.

Art Historian Gets Senior Fellowship

Kochi: Damodaran Nambidi, artist and art historian, has received senior fellowship (2011-12) constituted by the Union Ministry of Culture for the subject ‘A voyage through the art history of Kerala: Tracing the imprints of cave paintings in Edakkal’. An alumni of Baroda MS University, Nambidi has published a book titled ‘Malayaliyude Kazhchakal’ through fellowship from Kerala Lalithakala Akademi. Nambidi is planning an in-depth research that will shed light on the roots of Kerala’s visual art history.
