The district administration’s dream project of achieving self-sufficiency in electricity supply got a fillip on Monday, with the installation of solar panels at the civil station.

As many as 200 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the main building of the civil station.

Of the 276 solar panels, which were brought for installation, 76 will be installed in the coming days.

The installation process, being implemented by Nirmithi Kendra, is expected to be completed in around one week. Around 120 batteries, with capacity of 500 ampere, have already been connected to the panels.

“We have divided the project into two phases. In the first phase, we are aiming at generating 60 kw of electricity, which will be increased gradually to 100 kw in the second phase,” said a source associated with the project.

With the implementation of the project, the  Ernakulam civil station will be the first to have a solar power system. “We hope that the installation of the solar panels will be completed within two days.

The remaining work of connecting the solar panels to the battery may not take that much time,” said Rajeev M J, who works at the installation site.

An expert technical team from Anert, which is expected to visit the site soon, will oversee the certification of the project after doing a detailed examination. The Kolkata-based Agni Power and Electronics Private Limited won the bid for the project for 1.3 crore, competing with six other companies.
