Artful Coconut Shells Steal the Show

Coconut and byproducts are not raw materials for Shamsudeen and his wife Faseela, who have displayed their products at the Craft Bazaar. Made from coconut shells and coconut barks and skilfully crafted by hand, his works include coconut jars, flower vases, flowers made from bamboo, coconut dolls and decorative items.

“I make them during my leisure time. It is easy to make and it takes just two to three days to complete it,” says Shamsudeen. Making use of every piece of coconut shell and other materials at home, Shamsudeen and his wife make attractive and exclusive handicraft items and even utensils which come in handy at home. After having exhibited his products in various trade fairs held in the state, he is proud to be part of the fair once again.

Another stall which is prone to attract more of womenfolk who are conscious of revamping their homes is that of Edward Sebastian. The antique look of his products gives the visitors an awe of admiration. His wooden animal models are flawlessly shaped and crafted to perfection. “I mainly concentrate on animals as I have been doing it for years now. It is not an easy work which can be learnt in days. One requires patience and skill to make it perfect”, says Edward. Made mainly with wood like mahogany, teak, white wood and rosewood, his masterpieces includes tiger, elephant, horse, camel and birds. Skilled at his own profession, Edward takes just three days to complete one product, depending on the size of the item. Hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, he and his wife make sure to visit various exhibitions in the country. For him, exhibitions and trade fairs are venues to make profit as maximum people visit them.

“We had been to Madurai for an exhibition last December, which was a huge success,” says an enthused Edward.  -Vaikapila N G
