New Thalassery Archbishop

KOCHI: George Njeralakkadu, the Bishop of Mandya diocese in Karnataka, has been appointed as the Archbishop of Thalassery Archdiocese. The election was made at the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Church.

He took charge as 75-year-old Archbishop George Valiayamattom resigned according to the canon law.

Cardinal George Alencherry declared the new bishop’s name at 3.30 pm on Thursday.

The election was also announced at Vatican at Italian time 12 pm.George Njeralakkadu was born on June 23, 1946, at Kalayanthani which comes under the Kothamangalam diocese. In 1963, he joined the seminary that comes under the Thalassery diocese. He completed his studies at Mangalappuzha Pontifical Seminary, Aluva, and was appointed as the Bishop of Mandya in 2010.
