Liver Donor's Death Shatters His Family

KOCHI: At a time when public and private agencies encourage and celebrate organ donation across the state, a family has been orphaned due to the death of a Good Samaritan 11 days after donating his liver. Kunchakko Kuttikkad of Koruthod near Kanjirappally in Kottayam, a 54-year-old local Congress leader, died on November 28 after giving life to a young man by donating 60 per cent of his liver in November 17, 2015.

Kunchakko, a social worker and former president of the Kanjirappally block panchayat, had voluntarily initiated the move after learning about the plight of Roji Joseph who was in need of a liver transplantation, through media. The death of Kunchakko came as shocker to his four-member family which lives in a rented house.

Though many leaders, including Chief Minister, MPs and MLAs have expressed their grief over the untimely death of their colleague who died for a noble cause, the family is yet to receive any assurance for their future. The funeral of Kunchakko was held on November 30.
