Rubber Farmer Ends Life

KANNUR:  A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that natural rubber would be brought into the Make in India fold to ensure remunerative price, a rubber farmer committed suicide by consuming acid at his plantation at Pedenna, near Padiyattuchal in the district, on Monday night. He is suspected to have taken the extreme steps due to debt.

According to the police, the deceased, A Sunny Dominic, 56, a resident of Edat, who is also an ex-serviceman and a Gulf returnee, had grown rubber on his own land at Pedenna and borrowed loan from various banks for the purpose. Following the fall in the price of rubber, he failed to repay the loan and ran up huge debts. His body was found in his plantation, about 20 km from his house by local residents.

He is survived by wife Ponnamma, a teacher of St Mary’s school, Payyanur, and three children, including two sons.
