'Medal Winners will be Given Govt Jobs'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Athletes qualifying for 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil will be given government job in gazetted ranks, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

Addressing a news conference on Saturday at the National Games village here,  he said that all individuals representing the state who bagged medals in the National Games will be given government job.

A total of 250 sportspersons will be given government job in five years, the Chief Minister said  Sportspersons like Elizabeth Susan Koshy, Sajan Prakash, Anilda Thomas and Anu Raghavan will be considered for government job in the gazetted rank.

He said that so far sportspersons were  considered for job only on their return from participating in Olympics. Now just qualifying for Olympics will get them a job in gazetted post.

‘’The government had decided to provide jobs to all the state medal winners in the National Games. Those who have already received government jobs will be given higher grade and increment. A scheme for  providing jobs for sportspersons will be implemented effectively’’ he said. He said those who won gold medal for the state in the National Games will be given a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh each. Silver medal winners will get Rs 3 lakh each and bronze medal winners Rs 2 lakh each.

Olympics medal winners from the state will get Rs 1 crore as cash prize. Also the medal winners in Asiad and Commonwealth Games would be given Rs 50 lakh as cash prize. The CM said the family of 19-year-old netball player from Maharashtra Mayurish Pawar who drowned at Kovalam recently, will be given assistance of `10 lakh.
