KU Syndicate Ratifies VC's Report

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The Syndicate of the University of Kerala on Tuesday ratified Vice-Chancellor P K Radhakrishnan’s report favouring the withdrawal of affiliation of College of Teacher Education, Arkkannur, run by Chamakkala Education Trust, in which Syndicate member B S Jyothikumar is a member.

The Vice-Chancellor had earlier approved the recommendations of Pro Vice-Chancellor N Veeramanikandan that the BEd College run by Jyothikumar had furnished false details regarding the extent of land under the Trust when it applied for affiliation with the university in 2004.

This has paved the way for the revocation of Jyothikumar’s Senate membership. Jyothikumar, who is a KPCC secretary,  was elected to the Senate from the managers’ constituency, as a representative of the BEd college which is now in the dock.

The inquiry was ordered on the basis of a complaint filed by former Senate member Harilal Rajan.

The complainant alleged that three acres out of the 4.29 acres the trust had claimed to be in its possession while seeking affiliation was not fully in its name.

Out of the 21 members who attended the Syndicate meeting, 14 voted in favour of the Vice-Chancellor’s report while four members voted against it.

Three members abstained from voting. Ironically, those who were in favour of withdrawing the affiliation included nominees from the Congress, Muslim League and the Kerala Congress (M).

Jyothikumar has been given time till May 19 to furnish an explanation. The future course of action will be decided at the next meeting of the Syndicate.

Meanwhile, Jyothikumar has said that he will challenge the Syndicate decision in court.
