KOZHIKODE:She started imitating her father’s caricatures when she was in class V and in the same year itself, young Roshna M was able to present a big portrait of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer to his wife during his birth anniversary.
The daughter of Guinness World Record holder caricaturist Dileef M, Roshna has been working on caricatures and has even been making revenue out of her works since then. Her works were presented as mementos to major writers such as Sethu, K P Ramanunni, M Mukundan, Ram Puriyani and singers Umbayi and Najeem Arshad at the Biblio International Book Fair being held in the city, on the sidelines of which her drawing programme has been arranged.
Roshna, a class VIII student of PTM HSS, Kodiyathoor, cannot hide her joy of getting an opportunity to present her works to the writers and says, “I was really surprised when I learnt that I was to present the works to the writers and artists. I was asked to draw the caricatures of the guests reaching the fest and was not aware that it was for the guests themselves. I never dreamt of meeting those writers personally or about presenting their caricatures to them and was on cloud nine when they applauded me for my works.”
Roshna, who takes only a few minutes to finish the caricature of anyone sitting before her, says, “I used to take a long time in the initial days and reduced it through practice. Now I can draw a black and white caricature within seven minutes and a colour one by 10 minutes.”
“I notice the features of people while conversing with them, thinking about what feature in their face is to be highlighted and that helps reduce time. But I often start with drawing the eyes and it was my father’s caricatures that I have drawn the most,” she adds.
Her first programme was organised during a work experience fair at the Thiruvambady Higher Secondary School when she was in class VI, where she had drawn around 30 to 40 caricatures of the visitors. Similar programmes were also organised at various schools as part of some other functions and during the inauguration of Skyline Builders in Kozhikode.
“I will give her all support if she is willing to take this as a profession,“ says Dileef, who is now running a caricature and cartoon firm.
