Chandy Unveils 15-point Plan to Overhaul Kottayam

KOTTAYAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced a 15-point programme for the overarching development of the district, while inaugurating the mass contact programme‘Karuthal 2015’ here on Monday. The ambitious programme consists of a slew of projects such as ‘Suchithwa Kottayam’, ‘Discover Kottayam’ and ‘Skywalk Kottayam’. The Suchitwa Kottayam project would be launched on July 4 by lighting up ‘suchitwa deepam’ in all  houses, shops and other business establishments in the district.

Aiming at the overall development of tourism sector, the Discover Kottayam project would be implemented. It is slated to bolster the heritage, agro and adventure tourism circuits. To optimally unused land will be identified and included under the purview of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna.“The District Collector will coordinate these three projects,” the CM said, adding that the former had been asked to prepare a detailed project report for Suchitwa Kottayam.

A sports institute on the lines of IIT will be set up within five years at Chingavanam on a sprawling 15.75 acre land  where the Travancore Electro Chemicals was functioning. The work on the skywalk project will begin in Julyat the Seematti Roundana.

A project plan will be chalked out to resolve the frequent damage caused to water pipelines and roundthe- clock  service will be made available at the Water Authority in this regard. An industrial estate will be set up at Lalum block in Meenachil village on the 8.3- acre land. A veterinary polyclinic will be opened at Melukav as well as Kaduthuruthy, besides starting Kerala Literary and Cultural Centre and a heritage museum in Changanassery.

A sports school will be set up at Kanjirappally in memory of former minister and dy speaker K Narayanakurup.  An administration block and a payward, besides a family welfare block, will be set up at the district general hospital. A special project to protect and nurture Manimala river, Meenachil river  and Moovattupuzha is in the pipeline.
