KOTTAYAM: The police team probing the grisly murder of K V Mathew hailing from Vaikom in Thalayolaparamb, which mirrored the plot of hit Malayalam film ‘Drishyam’, on Thursday failed to make any headway in the efforts to locate the body that was puroportedly buried under a building nearly a decade ago. Though, a few bones were recovered on Thursday morning from a nearby patch of land, the officials did not believe that they were from a human corpse.
According to police, the bones were handed over to Department of Forensic Medicine at Government Medical College, Kottayam, for examination and the results were awaited. At the same time, digging was conducted at four places inside the newly constructed three-storeyed building as part of the efforts by the police to gather material evidence in the case. Meanwhile, district police chief (in-charge) K G Simon said the case would not stand legal scrutiny if they failed to unearth the remains of the victim. And legal and forensic experts echoed the view.
“Material evidence is crucial to the success of any case. Even if we could unearth the mortal remains of the victim, a postmortem examination may not be possible in the case as the bones might be in a half-decayed state. A DNA test alone can establish the identity of the mortal remains, which can be conducted at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Thriuvananthapuram,” said a forensic expert on condition of anonymity.
Besides, the investigators were bamboozled by the fact that the soil at the site, where the body was purportedly buried, had been mined during the construction of the new building and that it had been transported to various other places. The officials, though, insisted that accused Aneesh was not leading them along a wrong trail.
“We still take him at face value and are hopeful of gathering evidence from here soon,” said an official. The police have already conducted digging operations at four places located 25 to 40 feet away from Thalayolaparamb-Kottayam road. The excavation will continue on Friday morning as well.
