Court finds six guilty in Poovarani sex scandal

The additional Sessions Court, Kottayam has found six accused in the sensational Poovarani sex scandal case as guilty.

KOTTAYAM: The additional Sessions Court, Kottayam has found six accused in the sensational Poovarani sex scandal case as guilty.

Meanwhile, Additional Sessions judge K Babu acquitted as many as five accused owing to lack of evidences. The punishment for those, who are convicted, will be announced on Friday.

The convicted include Lizy Tomy of Ayarkkunnam, Jomini of Thekkoy, Jyothish of Poonjar, Thankamani of Poonjar Thekkekkara, Satheesh Kumar of Thrikkaruva, Kollam and Rakhi of Parakkatt, Thrissur. While the 10th accused Ullas committed suicide during the trial accused Shan K Devassia, Joby Joseph, Dayanandan, Binu Agustine and Joshy were acquitted.

The case, in which a minor girl from Poovarani near Pala, was allegedly abducted and raped at various places across the state from August 2007 to May 2008. She was lured by her close relative and prime accused in the case Lisy Tomy and handed over to other accused in the case. According to prosecution case, the victim died of Aids and Hepatitis in a hospital in Theni, Tamilnadu in May 2008 following the brutal sexual abuse for around a year.

Changanassery police registered a case in 2008, following a complaint was filed to district police chief by victim’s mother after her death, which led to the arrest of the accused.
