THRISSUR: As many as three elephants ran amok inside the Guruvayoor temple leaving two people including a mahout with severe injuries on Sunday morning.

The elephants — Gopi Kannan, which was carrying the Lord's idol, Sreekrishnan and Ravi Krishnan — were walking in the procession at the temple for 'Kazhcha Seeveli' at about 8.15 am. The incident happened when elephant Sreekrishnan walking behind Gopi Kannan caught its tail and which made Gopi Kannan furious.

Gopi Kannan, ran through Bhagavthi temple and the priest above it jumped from the top of the elephant and the idol of lord fell off his hand and got damaged. It later ran through the main gate. Gopi Kannan suffered severe rashes after it rubbed its body to an iron road and steel pieces inside the temple.

Sreekrishna ran into 'kalavara', where the food was served. The mahout managed to control the animal, while Ravikrishnan which ran through the west gate of the temple, was later brought under control by the mahout. Sreekrishna injured a 60-year-old woman Devaki, a resident of Guruvayoor.

While trying to save the woman, the mahout Subhash was also severely injured by the elephant, which punched its tusk into the mahout's chest. Both of them have been admitted to the Amala Hospital, Thrissur and the condition of mahout is reportedly critical.

A seven-year-old girl Radha, who was also injured in the incident, was discharged after medical treatment. Several others also suffered injuries as there was a heavy rush in the temple in the morning.
