Jisha rape and murder case: Ernakulam lower court finds Ameerul Islam guilty; verdict tomorrow

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted Ameerul Islam, a migrant labourer from Assam, in the murder and rape of Dalit law student Jisha.

Thirty-year-old Jisha was found murdered at her home in Kuruppampadi, near Perumbavoor, on April 28 last year.

The trial which spanned over two-and-a-half months since the hearing began on April 4, 2017, saw the prosecution examine over 100 witnesses, including 15 migrant labourers, and presented 290 documents and 36 material pieces of evidence.

In the judgment on Tuesday, Judge N Anilkumar found lone accused Ameerul guilty under Section 342 of IPC (trespass), 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (rape), 376 (a) causing death or resulting in the persistent vegetative state of the victim), and 302 (murder).

However, he was not found guilty under section 201 (causing the disappearance of evidence) and various sections under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The court will likely to pronounce the quantum of punishment on Wednesday.
