24-hour motor strike in Kerala on Friday

Trade union have called for a strike to protest the central government's move to raise third party insurance premium of vehicles up to 50 percent.

THIRUVANTHAPURAM: Trade unions in the State have called for a 24-hour motor vehicle strike on Friday to protest the central government's move to raise third party insurance premium of vehicles up to 50 per cent.

Private buses, auto rickshaws and taxis will stay off the road on Friday on account of the 24-hour motor vehicle strike.  

“A joint action council of CITU, INTUC, AITUC, UTUC, STU, HMS and KTUC has called the strike demanding withdrawal of hiked vehicle insurance premium and taxes increased by the centre through regional transport offices," action council leader Pattom Sasidharan said.

Autorickshaws, taxis, private buses, tempo travellers, jeeps, lorries and mini lorries will stay off the roads on account of the strike, he said.

The trade unions will take out a protest march to the AG's office at 10 am on Friday.

CITU state president Anathalavattom Anandan will inaugurate the march.

Kannur, MG and Calicut universities have postponed the examinations which were to be held on Friday.

Malappuram district has been excluded from the strike taking into account the Parliament bypolls.

The Unions had earlier called the strike on Thursday, but was postponed to Friday in the wake of the SSLC Maths examination that day.
