Southwest Monsoon vents fury on Peermade, Idukki and Munnar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Southwest Monsoon continued to remain furious in the high ranges of the state as Peermade, Idukki and Munnar recorded a rainfall of 11 cm each. While downpour continued in the northern districts, South Kerala got some respite.In the 24 hours up to 8.30 am Monday, Ernakulam south received 15 cm of rainfall, the highest in the state.

Five casualties were reported as the rain continued to disrupt the life of people in many districts, with the low-lying areas getting inundated and houses suffering damage.

The Meteorological Department said heavy rainfall was likely in one or two places in the state till Tuesday morning. It also said rain/thundershowers were likely in many places in Kerala and the Lakshadweep Islands up to Friday.

While no warning has been issued for fishermen for the next few days, officials said strong winds from west direction with speeds occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph were likely along and off the Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep islands during next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, high alert has been issued in the northern districts after incessant rain continued to lash the region.

Downpour triggered landslides, snapped power supply and caused massive traffic disruptions in Palakkad, forcing officers concerned to open relief camps.
