The Ernakulam Sub Court has ordered the government to pay an extra Rs 27.65 lakh/are than the amount it fixed as compensation to acquire the land for widening the road.

KOCHI:  The Ernakulam Sub Court has ordered the government to pay an extra Rs 27.65 lakh/are than the amount it fixed as compensation to acquire the land for widening the road.

Acting on a petition of the legal heirs of Chakkalapparambil Joseph, whose land was acquired for widening the road, the court asked the government to pay Rs 41.40 lakh/are as compensation instead of the Rs 13.75 lakh/are it had fixed. The petitioners had argued the amount fixed was too low.

Though road widening began in 2003, the petitioners’ land was not taken over. In 2010, 2.27 cents of land was acquired to construct the bus bay on Sahodaran Ayyappan Road in Poonithura village, submitted Blaze K Jose, the petitioners’ counsel.

The court also ordered the government to pay 30 per cent of the compensation as solatium, 12 per cent more than the market value and 15 per cent interest for the compensation amount till the date of realisation of the compensation.
