Litmus test in store for the Opposition

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition UDF is sharpening its weapons for an onslaught against the Left Government in the short session of the Assembly which begins on Monday.Political violence and killings involving the BJP and the ruling CPM, including the recent murder of an RSS activist in the capital, are most likely to be taken up in the House. How the issues will be brought up on the floor of the Assembly and manoeuvred to attack the ruling front will be a litmus test for the Congress-led Opposition.
The Opposition is also concerned about the narrowing of its political space in the wake of conciliatory talks between the CPM and the BJP to iron out issues and curb the political killings. LDF ally CPI playing the role of the Opposition within the ruling front has also come in handy for the onslaught planned by the Opposition.

It will also have to prove its mettle trying to establish the alleged political vendetta and conspiracy involving the Chief Minister’s Office in the arrest and judicial custody of Congress legislator M Vincent on allegations of sex abuse. The session has just 13 days of listed business and a slew of legislations is billed for making, including the GST Bill. However, the Opposition is keen to politically assert and corner the government on the lingering issues - the price rise over GST and the faux pas over admissions to self-financing medical and dental colleges.

“After the LDF Government took over the reigns of  the state, bloodshed and killings have resumed and the spectre of unrest looms large in all spheres,” Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala told Express. “The Opposition will raise this issue in the session with great importance. We will establish before the  people both the CPM and the BJP are a curse on the state. The two parties are only creating widows and destitutes by masterminding killings for petty political gains. The session is going to witness huge protests from the Opposition,” he said, dismissing the apparent truce between the CPM and BJP as a ploy to hoodwink the people.Congress legislature party deputy leader K C Joseph said it was very clear Vincent was targeted by the government and jailed with a vengeance. “It will definitely be raised in the House with all vigour, since the witch-hunt is continuing. Vincent’s complaint against the woman was never taken into account,” he said.
