Six Kottayam natives die in road accidents

KOCHI/KOTTAYAM : It was a black Wednesday for motorists from Kottayam as six people lost their lives in four separate road accidents across Kottayam and Ernakulam districts. In addition, four people were injured in two other accidents reported between Manippuzha and Nattakom along MC Road.T T Rajendra Prasad, 56, hailing from Thalavanatt house, Kumaranalloor near here, his son T R Arun, 32, and Prasad’s daughter’s father in-law Chandran Nair of Alappatt house died when a car in which they were travelling in rammed into a Kochi Metro pillar at Muttam near Aluva in the early hours on Wednesday. The accident occurred while they were returning home after dropping off Prasad’s son in-law Sreeraj at Nedumbassery Airport. Prasad was working in the library section of Malayala Manorama’s Kottayam office, while Arun was an employee with Manorama Online.

“Prasad died on the spot. Arun and Chandran Nair succumbed to injuries at a hospital near Edappally early morning. The vehicle overturned after hitting the pillar,” said an official with the Aluva traffic police. He said the accident was caused after Prasad fell asleep at the wheel. Exactly two months ago, three Kochi Metro workers were killed near the spot after a lorry ran over them.

In another accident, a 45-year-old man died when his motorcycle collided with a private bus in Manjappally near Kanjirappally. The deceased was Reji of Viruthiyil house, Elappara. According to the police, the accident occurred around 8 am. Reji lost control of his bike when it skidded on granite chips heaped on the wayside for tarring works and collided head on with a private bus.A youth died in Vaikom late on Tuesday night after his bike fell into a rivulet. The deceased was Praveen, 35, of  Puthinayil house, Koottummel near Kulasekharamangalam. His body was found on Wednesday morning. 

A college student hailing from Vaikom died in a bike accident at Udayamperoor in Ernakulam on Wednesday.Meanwhile, in two separate incidents, a car and a jeep rammed into electric posts at Nattakom and Manippuzha. A young doctor escaped unhurt in the first incident, while two people were injured in the jeep accident. In another incident, two youths were injured when their motorcycles collided with each other in Changanassery. 

One dies in Kanjoor
Meanwhile, a 19-year-old was killed when his bike rammed into an autorickshaw on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Lismon, a native of Kanjoor. According to the police, the incident occurred when Limson was heading towards Malayatoor from Kalady. “There were no eyewitnesses and the exact cause of the accident is unknown,” said police.
