Centre’s treatment to  IUML president E Ahamed a national insult, allege party members

The party argued that the government could have discussed it with Ahamed’s family and the IUML leadership if it had real fears of his death upsetting the Budget presentation.

MALAPPURAM : The IUML on Friday expressed its discontent over the Central Government’s treatment of its national president E Ahamed, who breathed his last following a cardiac arrest in New Delhi.

The party leadership, which met at the residence of state president Hyderali Shihab Thangal, described the Centre’s treatment of the MP as unfortunate and an insult to the nation.

“It’s an insult to the entire nation,” IUML leaders said after the meeting. “The Centre showed how uncivilised it is by insulting a leader like Ahamed,” they said.  The party said the government could have discussed it with Ahamed’s family and the IUML leadership if it had real fears of his death upsetting the Budget presentation.

“Mystery looms over the denial of permission to Ahamed’s children to visit their father in his final moments and the refusal to reveal the status of his health and treatment,” said party national treasurer P K Kunhalikutty.

The party also flayed the hospital authorities for keeping quiet on Ahamed’s health. “They did not say a thing even after Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi intervened midnight,” the IUML leaders said. The party said it would decide whether or not to go ahead with the case against the hospital after discussions with the family of the deceased MP.

The party will decide on further course of action at a working committee meeting to be held at Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

Khader Moideen new president

IUML national general secretary Khader Moideen will hold the additional charge of president following the passing away of Ahamed.  The party leadership decided to give national president’s charge to Moideen here on Friday. A meeting of the party national executive to be held in Chennai later this month will initiate the process of electing a new president.
