Kerala: Case against restaurant for overcharging bottled water

 The Legal Metrology Department on Tuesday registered a case against a restaurant in Thodupuzha for overcharging mineral water bottles.

KOCHI: The Legal Metrology Department on Tuesday registered a case against a restaurant in Thodupuzha for overcharging mineral water bottles.The department also inspected supermarkets in Ernakulam, Palakkad, Thrissur and Idukki following complaints food grain packets were being sold without MRP description.

R Ram Mohan, Deputy Controller, Central Zone, Legal Metrology Department, said a special drive was conducted in the wake of complaints retailers were overcharging customers on mineral water bottles.
“In Thodupuzha, we have registered a case against a restaurant which was charging Rs 30 for a bottle of mineral water instead of the MRP of Rs 20. We will slap a fine on the restaurant under the Packaged Commodities Rules. If the offence is repeated, prosecution proceedings will be initiated,” he said. The department will inspect the hotels in tourist locations where tourists are being fleeced by charging more on mineral water and other packaged food items.

 
Similarly, another drive was carried out to check whether packaged food grain were sold without MRP description on packets. On Tuesday, 10 cases were registered against supermarkets in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Idukki districts. Cases have been registered against two supermarkets in Ernakulam. The Legal Metrology officer said the drive would continue in the coming days.
