6 Medical Colleges debarred from admitting students to MBBS seats

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has denied permission to six medical colleges from the state, including SR Medical College and Research Centre at Varkala, from admitting students to MBBS seats.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has denied permission to six medical colleges from the state, including SR Medical College and Research Centre at Varkala, from admitting students to MBBS seats.

However, it has given recognition to Kannur Medical College for admitting 100 students of the 150 total seats sought for. As such the state will lose about 800 medical seats this year.  Apart from S R Medical College, Kerala Medical College (Palakkad), Al-Azhar Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital (Thodupuzha), Mount Zion Medical College (Pathanamthitta), DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (Wayanad) and Government Medical College (Painavu, Idukki) have been debarred.

The MCI has rejected the recognition based on the report of the Lodha Committee. It was found the colleges do not have the required infrastructure and they do not follow the norms stipulated by the Lodha Committee.

Kerala Medical College (Palakkad) Al-Azhar Medical College and Super Specialty Hospital (Thodupuzha), S R Medical College and Research Centre and DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (Wayanad) have been barred from admissions for two years, while the other colleges have only been barred for 2017-18.
