Inspection at Kollam railway station for toxic fish

A quick test using special paper strip on pearl spots that came from Chennai could not find the presence of formalin, a chemical illegally used for preserving fish.

KOLLAM: The Food safety officials checked the fish consignments that reached Kollam by train for toxic chemicals on Tuesday. A quick test using special paper strip on pearl spots that came from Chennai could not find the presence of formalin, a chemical illegally used for preserving fish.

The assistant commissioner of Food Safety Jayakrishnan said the samples were taken to Food Safety lab in Thiruvananthapuram for further testing. Five boxes of fish weighing 1250 kilograms came in Trivandrum mail.

The joint exercise by railways and Food Safety Commissionerate was held as part of the third phase of Saga Rani campaign to ensure safe fish consumption.
