Van mishap: Kid succumbs after suffering serious injuries

A four-year-old girl, who has been undergoing treatment at a hospital after suffering serious injuries in the Maradu school van accident last week, died on Sunday.

KOCHI: A four-year-old girl, who has been undergoing treatment at a hospital after suffering serious injuries in the Maradu school van accident last week, died on Sunday. She became the fourth victim of the tragedy. The hospital authorities said Carolin Joby breathed her last at 1.25 pm. The body will be handed over to her family on Monday after completing the inquest proceedings.

Hospital sources said the death was due to pulmonary edema , resulting from fluid accumulation in the lungs. Carolin, who badly damaged her brain, had been on ventilator support. Her parents, Joma and Joby, who are working in Australia, had already reached Kochi following the accident.

Adithyan S Nair, 4, Vidyalakshmi, 4, and ayah Latha Unni, 45 had died after the school van of Kidz World, Poonithura, fell into a temple pond when the driver negotiated a curve on Kattithara Road. Eight kids and the helper were in the van.
