The CBI, which had earlier booked a Malayali BSF commandant for possessing unaccounted cash worth over Rs 45 lakh, has now registered a disproportionate assets (DA) case against him.

KOCHI:  The CBI, which had earlier booked a Malayali BSF commandant for possessing unaccounted cash worth over Rs 45 lakh, has now registered a disproportionate assets (DA) case against him. The case was registered against Jibu D Mathew, Commandant, 83 Battalion of BSF, deployed at Murshidabad in West Bengal, after the CBI inquiry found that he had allegedly amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 42,51,100 through illegal means.

The CBI had in January arrested Jibu at the Alappuzha railway station and seized Rs 45 lakh from him. Another West Bengal native allegedly involved in cattle business was also arrested in the case.  The CBI investigating the money seizure case had initiated a probe into the wealth amassed by him. The wealth amassed during the check period from November 1, 2016, to January 1, 2018, was assessed to register the case.

According to a CBI officer, at the beginning of the check period, Jibu owned immovable assets worth Rs 12,07,000 and immovable assets worth Rs 15,22,188. His total assets were worth Rs 27,29,188. However, at the end of the check period, he had assets worth Rs 81,16,213, including immovable assets worth Rs 12,07,000 and movable assets worth Rs 69,09,213. His income during the check period was Rs 32,52,529, while the expenditure was Rs 21,16,604.

After checking the expenditure and income, CBI estimated that he had disproportionate assets worth Rs 42,51,100.“The team which probed the money seizure case had recommended to launch another probe into amassment of wealth by the officer. Following this, an initial probe was carried out and a case has been registered,” a CBI officer said.
