Kerala Assembly adjourns sine die

Curtains came down on the 11th session of the 14th Kerala Assembly which adjourned sine die on Monday after meeting for 12 days.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Curtains came down on the 11th session of the 14th Kerala Assembly which adjourned sine die on Monday after meeting for 12 days. A session meant specifically for legislative business, 10 of the 12 days exclusively dealt with this job. One day each was dedicated to private members’ Bills and pleas for supplementary grants. Several crucial ordinances were introduced as Bills and passed in the session which began on June 4. 

These included the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland (Amendment) Bill, the Travancore-Cochin Hindu Religious Institutions (Amendment) Bill, the Kerala State Higher Education Council (Amendment) Bill, the Kerala University (Amendment) Bill,  the Kerala Panachayat Raj (Amendment) Bill,  the Kerala Municipalities (Amendment) Bill and the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation (Amendment) Bill. 

The session witnessed a detailed discussion on the Nipah virus outbreak in north Kerala. It was this session that decided to change the Assembly hours from 8.30 am-1.30 pm to 9 am-2 pm. Saji Cherian of the CPM, who won the Chengannur by-election, was sworn in on the first day.
