Idukki receives highest rainfall in 17 years

The previous record, at 221.2 mm of rainfall, belongs to the year 2001. Idukki is hardly a couple of feet away from reaching the full reservoir level.

IDUKKI: Idukki district has registered the highest rainfall in 17 years, recorded at 156.306 mm on Monday, with Udumbanchola, Devikulam, Peermade, Thodupuzha and Idukki taluks receiving 89.4 mm, 202.3 mm, 159 mm, 150.7 mm and 153.4 mm rainfall respectively.

The previous record, at 221.2 mm of rainfall, belongs to the year 2001. Idukki is hardly a couple of feet away from reaching the full reservoir level, the only time in its three-decade history when inflows from the June-July season would be enough to fill it up. The two earlier times this happened were in 1981 and 1992 when shutters of the dam were opened as the water level reached its full capacity The full reservoir level is 2,403 ft. 

On Tuesday, it reached 2,375.52 ft, which is 69.3 percent of its total capacity. And there was more rain to be expected in the catchment areas. The water level on the same day last year was 2,316.98 ft, which was 20.92 percent of its total capacity.

1,628 in relief camps in Pathanamthitta
Pathanamthitta: A total of 1,628 people were rehabilitated in 64 relief camps, following incessant rain that hit the district, particularly Mallappally, Thiruvalla and Kozhenchery taluks, for the past week.

21,458 people in relief camps in Alappuzha
Alappuzha: With the flood situation continuing to cause misery, on Tuesday, the district administration opened 86 relief camps, and 21,458 people from 4,977 families have been housed here.

Dam panel meet today
In the present circumstance of the water level increasing in the Mullaperiyar Dam, the Mullaperiyar sub-committee has scheduled to visit the dam on Wednesday.
