THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress state leadership has found itself in a Catch-22 situation with party president Rahul Gandhi coming out in support of the Supreme Court’s Sabarimala verdict. Even as the party’s state unit has been on a warpath against the LDF Government for trying to implement the order, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed Rahul’s statement.

Pinarayi said Rahul’s statement makes it clear he shares the same opinion made by the AICC, which had termed the SC verdict “historical”. It’s noticeable that Congress spokesman Anand Sharma has supported Rahul’s opinion. It’s unfortunate that the Congress leadership in the state does not share the same opinion, said the CM.

“The stance taken by the Congress leadership in the state also points at the anti-democratic state in which the party has come to. The Congress in Kerala has moved away from the democratic values based on which the Indian Constitution was founded. A section within the Congress party in the state has been adopting a conservative stance, which could only help the BJP in the long run,” he said.

The Congress, with its rich tradition of being part of renaissance movements once, seems to be compromising with Sangh Parivar politics. Some leaders are not only rejecting secular values, but also dismissing the opinions of the party national leadership, he added.
