BHUBANESWAR: President (Chief Justice) of Supreme Court of the United Kingdom Lord Nicholas Addison Phillips is amazed by the efficacy and relevance of the Indian Penal Code that forms the base of the criminal justice system in the country.

Comparing the British and the Indian criminal justice systems at an international seminar at KIIT University to commemorate the 150 years of IPC on Sunday, he said unlike India, the criminal law in the UK is not set out in a single code, resulting in confusion among public and even lawyers and judges.

“It is amazing that Indian Penal Code has survived 150 years, and credit for this goes to Lord Macaulay, who must have closely studied Indian society while drafting it,” he said.

A galaxy of national and international legal luminaries joined the deliberation, inaugurated by Justice Ananga Kumar Patnaik of the Supreme Court of India.
