An elderly woman was robbed of her gold chain by a miscreant in the Bhubaneswar-bound Jan Shatabdi Express  late on Thursday night .

The elderly couple, travelling from Kolkata to Bhubaneswar were terrified when the miscreant snatched the woman’s chain and escaped. The couple have been identified as Kishore Chandra Dash and Chandrakanti Dash.

Kishore said the snatcher struck when the train was leaving Cuttack and jumped off the running train. The incident took place at around 1 am.

“I am a heart patient and there was no way that I could have run after the thief from the running train,” explained Kishore.

“It was surprising that a train like Jan Shatabdi had no armed escort. Even the ticket inspector had got down at Cuttack station,” he added. They reported the matter to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Cuttack, as well as Bhubaneswar.

The GRP Bhubaneswar said there had been no official sanction for an armed escort for Jan Shatabdi Express since it is a day train.
