Youth gunned down: Police detain rival

A day after videographer Rakesh Kumar Nayak (25) was gunned down in Unit VI area, Commissionerate Police have detained a rival of the deceased. He is believed to be the main suspect. However, the man, who fired on Rakesh, is still at large.

Police suspect that the killer may have been hired by the rival of Rakesh and are investigating that angle. “We may have had the main suspect but we need to find the killer and the weapons and stitch up the whole incident before going public about it,” reliable sources said.

The rival was nabbed from Nayagarh district. Insiders said the killer has been identified and multiple number of squads have been after him.

Investigation suggests that Rakesh may have had to pay with his life for a previous enmity with the rival whom he knew since their stay at Satya Nagar area. Though Rakesh was a videographer by profession, he also played the right hand man of a realtor. The main suspect also belongs to a rival camp of the realtor.  “Apart from business issues that could have led to the attack, the strongest reason for the murder appears to be personal enmity,” police sources said. The deceased and his rival had a bout of bitter fight over a year ago.

Police found out that the killer’s built was different from the main suspect which led to the angle of ‘supari’ killing.

Meanwhile,  police are also probing the angle that Rakesh may not have been the target. A friend of his, who was present at the spot when Rakesh was shot, could have been on the crosshairs of the killer.

Going by eyewitnesses accounts, the killing was planned and swift. A minor mishap, which preceded the incident, was probably orchestrated. Soon after it took place, some guys made a recce of the scene and ensured that Rakesh and his friend were there. Then the killer, just one, arrived on a bike. He had put on a helmet without a visor.

After stopping barely a few feet away, he whipped out his gun and fired. Rakesh’s friend noticed him first and fell off the bike the duo was sitting on. Rakesh took four bullets. One brushed his arm, the rest were on target. The killer tucked the gun in his waist and fled.
