Guv Seeks Answer on Sine Die Adjournment

Governor SC Jamir on Tuesday summoned Secretary of Odisha Legislative Assembly to explain the circumstances under which the House had to be adjourned sine die on Monday, midway through the Winter session.

The summon came a day after Congress MLAs met the Governor and drew his attention to the abrupt manner in which the Assembly was adjourned eight days ahead of schedule.

Assembly secretary Amiya Sarangi explained the situation that led to adjournment of the house for 30 minutes.  Five bills and a motion on cyclone and subsequent floods were pending when the House was adjourned by Speaker Pradip Amat.

He did so after accepting a motion brought by Government chief whip Pravat Tripathy to curtail the mandatory sitting days in a calendar year from 60 days.

Describing the move as undemocratic, leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh criticised the State Government for running away from the Assembly.

The House had witnessed noisy scenes for three days as the Congress members disrupted proceedings demanding the resignation of Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Surjya Narayan Patro for allegedly misleading the House on central assistance to the State.
