Low production of onions in Karnataka has led to another steep rise in its price which had stabilised for some time last month.
Onion price reached an all time high of ` 50 per kg in August due to a dip in the supply from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The price surpassed the all-time high to reach ` 52 per kg in Unit I market here. The price came down to ` 45 early this month, bringing relief to the consumers who were hoping further fall in the price.
General secretary of Unit I Market Association Gayadhar Swain said onions were being sold at ` 52 to ` 55 in the market. However, small vendors are charging ` 55 to ` 60 though wholesale price is ` 48 per kg. Going by the market trend, they do not expect the onion price to stabilise before December, Swain added.
