Armyman accused of raping minor

A jawan has been accused of raping a minor girl in Kalyani village on Balasore district on Monday. Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab the culprit.

A jawan has been accused of raping a minor girl in Kalyani village on Balasore district on Monday. Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab the culprit.

According to sources, the jawan, Ranjan Kumar Jena of Kalyani under Khantapara police limits, Jena went to the house of the 12-year-old girl of the same village on the pretext of meeting her mother on Sunday. Finding the girl alone in the house, he raped her.

When she raised an alarm, her neighbours reached there but Jena managed to flee. When the matter was brought to the notice of his elder brother, he tried to suppress the matter by offering `300 to the victim’s father to treat her.

Police said when her relatives refused to take the money, family of the accused threatened them of dire consequences. In-charge police officer of Gopalpur outpost Panchanan Panda said a case has been registered. Jena works in the Indian Army and recently came to his village on leave.
